More people these days are choosing to downsize their homes, leaving their large house where it’s expensive to maintain upkeep and worrying about constant cleaning! Moving can be a great opportunity for a new start. Still, it’s not always easy to go from living in a big home to a smaller one. Here are are some tips to help you with your move into a smaller home:
Change Your Mindset
If downsizing wasn’t your first choice, it’s natural to be sad about this new start in a smaller space. Concentrate on the positives of a smaller home! You’ll get more time to relax rather than constantly cleaning, less pressure to host gatherings, and reduced maintenance costs are all advantages of a home with smaller square footage. If you’re moving to an area that allows you to get places without driving, you can rely less on your car, so you’ll save money on gas. There’s always some good in downsizing and keep the reasons why it is a good thing as inspiration as you go through everything to sort, sell, or donate.
Decide What to Get Rid Of
Think about which belongings would make you the most sad to part with. Those are the possessions you need to take with you to your new home. Those that are replaceable can be purchased later if and when you really need them. Sometimes you’ll realize you don’t actually need them at all.
Don’t Bother With ‘Just in Case’ Items
When you live in a big home with a lot of storage space, it’s easy to collect and keep things just in case you may need them eventually. When you live in a smaller space, you have to have the mindset of using up everything you have before stocking up on more. Eventually, you may find that you really need something you don’t own and you can go out and buy it right there and then. Cut out duplicates of things too, from various sets of dishes and glasses to numerous serving spoons. While duplicates may be useful in a larger home, these extras won’t fit in a smaller space.
Create New Habits
A smaller home won’t have as much storage space as a bigger home, which can be a benefit some ways. Fewer places to keep things means you don’t have to go searching through a crawl spaces or search through hundreds of boxes for specific items. In a smaller area, nearly all of your belongings will have a clearly defined space to kept and will be easier to find. Downsizing can force you to get rid of some items that you may have been living with for years. Whether or not you use them on a regular basis, parting with them can be a challenge. Take this opportunity to cherish the belongings you really need and create a new way of living!
