Moving with kids can be a tough task. With them running around all day and wanting to play in the boxes, being able to set aside time and be able to pack away all their toys is a chore. Moving is hard on children, especially when they don’t really grasp what is going on. Remember to take it one day at a time and do what you can to prepare for your move.
Pack up the house while they’re asleep
Leave a box of toys out for your kids to play with. Anything else can be packed away. Try to do this at night, so they aren’t pulling out toys that they claim they need. They’ll be able to make do with what you let them have until they get to the new house.
Use color-coded duct tape
Color-code all of your boxes using different colored duct tape. This way, you’ll know easily whose boxes are whose. You can sort boxes by the duct tape and be able to put them in the right rooms without a hassle.
Start months earlier than you think is reasonable
Packing up a house with kids is bound to take a lot longer than if you didn’t have kids. Start way in advance to be able to finish when you need to. Even if you start packing smaller items, like decorations or clothes that aren’t in-season, you’ll end up finishing faster as the moving date gets closer.
Pack each family member one suitcase
If you are facing extended temporary housing, have one suitcase per family member. Pack each child a small stand-up duffel bag with pockets on the outside and put them into one suitcase, making it easy to separate items and find things on each temporary stop along the way.
Have a few new and exciting surprises
Buy a few new toys for the move and plan a trip to your favorite family restaurant for the very end to keep up morale. You may be sad about the goodbyes, but there is still a new adventure in front of you. They’ll be able to make new memories.
Say goodbye to your old house
After everything is packed up, allow your kids to have a final goodbye to their home. Especially if this is the only place they have know, giving them this time will help them better understand that they aren’t coming back. They’ll be able to say hello to their new house shortly!
Give yourself and your kid’s grace
Moving is psychologically emotionally exhausting. Kids sometimes don’t understand that when they move, that’s their new home. They have a hard time adjusting to a new space and especially a new bedroom. Moving is hard for everyone. You need to find a new grocery store, make new friends, and figure out the area. Adults understand that this is a big change, and need to help their kids adjust correctly to a new environment. This can mean a new school, and new sports teams and activities with kids they don’t know. It takes time, but they will get used to everything soon.
